As a car designer, you can probably go your entire career without thinking about whats really inside of a car. There are lots of cool designers, and students doing things with "alternative power sources" but I've never seen anyone really focus on designing the system of infrastructure for these systems.
With that big introduction, here are some sketches of a battery exchange station for electric vehicles. Instead of charging a battery in the vehicle, the driver goes to a station like this and changes the empty battery in their vehicle for a full one. The batteries at the station charge, and illuminate when they are ready to make identification easy.
